ABSTRACT
With technology advancing everywhere around us, it is changing our work ethnic, hobbies, and everyday life. As an artist I think of the day when someone will figure out how to make art easier, (and less of a mess) to produce. With painting it becomes a real process to get everything out, collect your paints, mix paints, work hours on your canvas, an finally take forever to clean up the mess. If you could produce what you paint on a stretched canvas on the computer, wouldn’t life be easier as an artist to construct everything through this technology?
Today with motion and touch screen technology this vision of art may really become a reality in the very near future.

STRETCHING CANVASES TO INTERACTIVE CANVASES

In the Renaissance Era painting on woven canvases was the popular way to create art. It was the most reliable way to produce your creative thoughts since art is meant to be forever, it is to reflect a time of emotion, history, and creative thought. Art needs to be preserved in the best way possible.  Canvases were first used in Venice Italy. This medium was the most practical way of art being movable and not fading away.
Even on canvases, art needs to be preserved and sometimes restored. It is sad to see classical art being restored, because it will never be the same. Several historic works of art have several brush-up layers of paint so viewers can still see the work. Some museums do not allow flash photography, since the flash can be dangerous to some works.  Hopefully soon our technology will preserve art in generations to come.
Today we use many different mediums to produce art on. With new mixed medium works of art, any type of artwork is becoming acceptable now a day. As long as the ideas are original, the work is suitable. Our meaning of a canvas today is a place to hold artistic expression. The matter or size of the canvas is up to the artist.

In today’s generation Computer art is a growing epidemic, at rapid speed. Programs are being made for every kind of art, from 3D modeling, to painting, to interior designing, graphic art is helping out every area.
Programs need to be designed by computer engineers, and in 1961 MIT Student Ivan Sutherland created a drawing program called Sketchpad. This program may have been simple, but it started the way we design with a mouse.
Computer games and video games are also very important with graphic technology, and in 1961 another MIT student, Steve Russel, developed the first video game called Spacewar, written for a DEC PP-1 system.  Computer and Video games today are extremely popular with a 47% increase over last year. In the economy it is incredible how well gaming systems have been doing. The industry itself is growing very rapidly, and actually increasing jobs by 75% in 2009.
Computer graphics is paving the way of the future; to help creativity and to help with the economic downturn, creating jobs with technology is the future of art.

With touch screen technology practically perfect, there are huge advances in the future for creative ways. In the gaming console field we see the potential for the Wii to make their way, creating the Wii Spray, which will be the first interactive artistic movement game made.
In only a matter of time will the future of Mac create a computer where it is entirely touch screen. Mac’s are the future of technology and they always seem to be a step ahead of the competition.  The next big step in the Mac world will be the Apple Tablet, or also called the ModBook. It has recently shown at the Macworld Expo and is a 10 inch touch screen device.
It is also time for Apple to invent a new revolutionary machine. It seems they are spending too much time redeveloping their line of iPods, which one day will almost be so small it will be invisible. Apple has more patents on technology, which make it difficult for others to develop and sell. Their newest patent is the Scroll wheel technology, which might be used for an apple Modbook quite soon.
Once the Modbook comes out it will be a huge tool for artists to use as a canvas. Hopefully much bigger size screens will develop and the world of Interactivity will change forever. The interactivity will be such a huge hit in every occupation it will soon be a way of computer life.

Outline: Stretch Canvases to Interactive Canvases

April 21, 2009 at 9:56 pm (Uncategorized)

History of Canvases

• Became popular in Italy during the Renaissance Era.
• Venice is said to be the first place Canvases were used.
• Why Canvas and not wood? This medium prevented lasting results, where on wood or paper would fade.
• Also lighter than wood, easier for moving, and storage.

Source:  http://www.wikio.com/article/72352656

Today’s Canvases

• Artist’s have branched out today from just using linen canvases. We try to find new ways to produce art.
• Some art may be produced on anything and everything from the side of a structure (like a building or a bridge) to something as simple as cardboard.

Our meaning of a Canvas?
• A place to hold artistic expression. The size of a canvas is never ending.

Computer Art
• Computers play a role in the production, or display of artwork.
• 1961 MIT Student Ivan Sutherland create a computer drawing program called Sketchpad.
Source:  (http://hem.passagen.se/des/hocg/hocg_1960.htm)
• Many standards of computer graphics got its start this early program.
• Early graphics were Vector Graphics, and modern day graphics are Raster based using pixels.

• 1961 Another MIT student, Steve Russel created the first video game called Spacewar.
• Written for the DEC PDP-1 (a type of computer system)

• Computer graphics paves the way for creativity without the ability to draw. Proves that Creativity is just as artistic as painting and drawing.

Touchscreen Technology

• This is the big advancement to an electronic canvas. Since the Multi-touch screen of the iphone and ipod are pretty perfect.

Future Canvases

Apple Tablet/Modbook
• Already shown at the Apple Expo, this is the new technology of the future

Wii Spray
• Not out yet, but it is a new advancement in computer art with games.

How We Get Our Movies

March 31, 2009 at 8:21 pm (Uncategorized)

How We Get Our Movies
By, Shannon Fitzgerald

Abstract
Our pastime of watching movies began as early as 1896, when the first projected motion picture was at the Koster and Bial’s Music Hall on 34th street in New York City. The Vitascop was used then as the first film projector invented by Charles F. Jenkins and Thomas Armat, both pioneers of cinema.

Through the years theaters were very popular, from Drive-in Movie theaters to now IMAX the theaters still stand strong for popularity.

With the invention of TV, VHS devices and DVD’s we now like to take our movies home.

Blockbuster Videos was a local business the started in 1985 in Dallas Texas. Through the years it progressed to a huge company with other competitors such as Hollywood Video.

With the current technology boost, and wave of internet success our old pastime of renting movies is almost in non-existence. Our obsession of watching movies is now easier than ever.

One of the first advances in movies started with Pay-Per-View. Which led to movies on Demand. But instead of waiting for your favorite movie to appear from the cable company, it would be much easier to rent the movie you like and have it delivered to your house. Which is what Netflix is about.

Originally called Netflix.com the company began in 1997 and became big a year later. The company is very popular now with DVD rentals. Since it is very user friendly it has gain much popularity and will only advance in the future.

Many knock off companies have formed from Netflix, but nothing can compare. Movies re taking a new turn and eliminating the hardware.

Currently the new fade is to buy a box that will hold your DVD rentals through your TV. Apple, Samsung, Xbox, Roku, are all in the current business. This is something to follow through into the future. This process of owning a box saves time, and in the long run money. Soon you will be able to buy movies off the same box, store it in a library, and have that library compatible with your entire house. Along with music downloads and much more.

A New Way to Rent
As our technology advances so does our life styles. In the 1950’s it was popular to go to the movies for a date, the drive through movies theater was even a bigger hit. Today going to the movies is still an experience. But what do we do when our movies are no longer shown n the big screen?
Renting movies has been a big part of our weekend nights in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Over time it has slowly changed. With the Internet becoming a huge success we found illegal downloading and watching of movies. From there we realized we needed to find a better way of renting our movies than your local Blockbuster.

In ’97 an online company started called Netflix.com, (later dropping the .com and standing alone with the name Neflix). This company changed the way we rent movies, and continues to lead the pact in new technology.

Netflix is a much cheaper way to get your movies. With no late fees and a set monthly price you can order movies and have them shipped to your house in as little as one business day. They have tons of movies to view online, as well as TV shows.

Netflix and Blockbuster isn’t the only way to go get a movie. A new type of Kiosk may be seen at your local supermarket. Redbox is a new cheap way to receive new movies. Instead of paying 5 dollars for your movies t Blockbuster, or waiting for your Netflix to be sent to your home, Redbox cuts out the hassle and lets you do the work.

I see Redbox as a temporary solution to renting movies. As long as it is convenient to the customer it will still be greatly successful. The new thing lately is renting movies through your TV. Such companies like Samsung, Apple, and Xbox have decided it would be much easier streaming new releases to your home from the Internet through your television. This will most defiantly be a thing of the future

Possibly the future will be more technical where you can rent, store, and buy, not only movies and shows but music, albums, and possibly even computer software. The possibilities are endless when it comes to advances in movie rentals.

From Printing Press To Word Press: the changing technology of the written word.

February 25, 2009 at 12:07 am (Uncategorized)

Print by Albrecht Durer "King Death and the Devil"

Print by Albrecht Durer "King Death and the Devil"

From Printing Press To Word Press: the changing technology of the written word.

Abstract

Before any print technology was formed there was Manuscript. Manuscript was printing by hand. It was tedious work and there needed to be something done about the way we read our written word.
Pi Sheng, a Chinese alchemist, invented the movable type. From that time on the movable type changed the way we create books, documents, letters, forms, and our own creative thoughts.
It is important to know the way we evolved concerning the written word. Something today we take for granted. We should know our past technology to be thankful of what we have now.
Print isn’t just to communicate words, it is to communicate symbols, thoughts, emotions, and feelings through various lines, shapes, colors and textures. Printmaking is a great form of art that easily evolved from this technique. Print has always been an artistic form, and always will evolve artistically as well as technologically.
With the invention of the computer, and Internet, as well as our world being very visually dominant some have said this is the age of the written word. Instead in recent years it may truly be the beginning of the written word. With many people intrigued with online articles, links, blog’s, news sites, we have seen various new ways of producing our written word.
Today we have seen a major increase in Blogs. One of the most popular today is Word Press. It is a form of open source bloging, which means it is absolutely free. It is a way to replace your diary or journal, and replace it with an http address. It can be viewed publicly, privately, or only with friends. This new technology will bring across many new ways of viewing the written word.

From Printing Press, To Word Press.
From Paper to ink, this is where we showed our human thoughts to others. It is apparent today that we have evolved this technique greatly. It was a long dreary process, it took hundreds and thousands of years, it has proven to be an ever changing process, and will be long into our future.
Manuscript was the first process of written communication. This procedure was very time-consuming and made books very expensive. At this time mainly religious books and documents were produced, since that is where the money was. Print was considered for the poor only; many aristocratic bibliophiles would be in disgrace in the presence of non-manuscript text
Before Guttenberg ever invented the printing press, or the woodblock version was used, it was Pi Sheng who should truly be credited for this technological advancement. Pi Sheng, a Chinese Alchemist, invented the movable type. Made from a mixture of clay and glue, hardened by baking he composed texts by laying out the symbols side by side on an iron plate.
Someone who had a similar idea to Sheng was also another China man named Wang Chen. He had the craftsmanship to carve more than 60,000 characters on movable wooden blocks. His carving technique attributed to him inventing a horizontal compartment that revolved around a vertical axis to easier handle of type.
Many types of printmaking has been formed ever since the start of printing has been formed. It’s the artistic way of this communicative process. There has been many forms of printmaking that have evolved, presenting more creative ways of this process. Some of the ways include dry point, monotone, lithograph, additive and subtractive method, and much more. Some of the most amazing artists have made a name for this artistic process. Such as Albrecht Dürer, an artist in the renaissance error, who was a master of graving and woodcut.
Many feel like it will be the end of the written word. Although in recent studies it may be more of a new way to create the written word. In an article written by USA Today they stated that “The written word is not only alive and well, but dominating the new media with a vengeance.” Today we are writing and reading on the Internet more than ever. It is amazing that just a few years ago we would say writing is dyeing and the visual, interactive eye will take over. But lately with blogs, links, articles we are very much in the new age of being very interested of new ways of writing (or typing) our words.
Because of the computer it is the downfall of print documents. With magazine subscriptions down and newspapers as well we like to read via the Internet. We find better ways of viewing information, the Internet also has endless amount of information available.
Today blogs are very popular. Remember such blogs as live journal or Xanga? They came and went in the late 90s. Today’s new blog is Word Press. Word Press is an open source blog, which means it is absolutely free! Built on PHP and MySQL it is a well-architecture and elegant source of bloging. Today it is the most used, and widely growing source.
In future years I see Word Press becoming important in every business, no longer will we use/and buy Microsoft Word. It will be free via the Internet.

Past History Outline: Printing Press to Word Press

February 11, 2009 at 1:45 am (Uncategorized)

I. Introduction:
The Printing Press.
http://www.mainz.de/gutenberg/english/erfindun.htm

First step in History to quickly communicate the written word to a large amount of people.

II. Before Gutenberg:

Print trade was established long before, using woodblock technology. Gutenberg had an easier idea, that split the text into individual components. Instead of Wood he used steal.

III. Print as Art:
http://www.worldprintmakers.com/english/opm.htm

First developed in Eastern Asia, characters on bones, bronze, ceramics, and stone were given evidence of symbols of writing. Print is a form of art in many techniques, dry point, mono printing, lithograph, etching, additive and subtractive methods all give a new life to what print is used for.

IV. End of the Written Word?
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1272/is_2646_127/ai_54098989

Articles which provides belief that we still enjoy our original ways on communication, writing. Although maybe typing is more exact to be.
Not only is the written word alive and well, but dominating the new media.

V. Printing Press to Word Press:

Word Press is a new great way to communicate your words, and ideas to the internet. It is an open source blog publishing application that is very user friendly.

VI. Future of Press:

Where your thoughts will automatically be transferred, and translated.
